Eddie Mutwe, also known as Edward Ssebuufu, recently appeared in the Masaka Grade One Magistrate Court in a visibly distressed state. After being detained for several days, Mutwe struggled to walk and shivered constantly, prompting his lawyer to argue that his poor health made a fair trial impossible. The lawyer urged the court to prioritize urgent medical attention for Mutwe.
Mutwe faces several charges, including aggravated robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property. According to the charges, he is accused of violently robbing journalists and civilians, stealing mobile phones, cash, and other personal items. He also faces accusations of assaulting journalists, including Zainab Namusazi, a correspondent for NBS Television, and others. Additionally, Mutwe is accused of destroying a video camera valued at Shs1.5 million.
The court decided to commit Mutwe to the High Court for trial and ordered his transfer to Luzira Prison. The court cited the need for better medical facilities to address Mutwe's deteriorating health. Mutwe's mother was present in court and tearfully appealed for her son's medical attention, expressing her distress at seeing him in such a state.
The case has sparked reactions from various quarters. National Unity Platform (NUP) party leaders have accused state security of abusing the judicial system to stifle political dissent. Human rights groups have also weighed in, accusing Uganda's security agencies of using torture and prolonged detention to intimidate opposition voices. The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, posted about Mutwe's detention on social media, which has sparked widespread outrage and concern over Mutwe's treatment.
