South Africa's National Assembly Speaker Steps Down Amid Corruption Investigation

South Africa's National Assembly speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, announced her resignation amidst an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption during her tenure as defence minister. The investigation took a serious turn when investigators raided Mapisa-Nqakula's home last month, though details of the allegations remain undisclosed.

In a statement addressing her resignation, Mapisa-Nqakula vehemently denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing that her decision to step down does not equate to an admission of guilt. Effective immediately, her resignation also marks her departure as a member of parliament.

Having served as defence minister from 2012 to 2021, Mapisa-Nqakula's reputation now faces scrutiny as reports emerge that she is suspected of receiving substantial bribes from a former military contractor. Despite her attempts to halt potential legal action, including a failed court bid to prevent her arrest, no charges have been formally filed against her, and law enforcement authorities have remained tight-lipped about any impending arrests.

The unfolding saga surrounding Mapisa-Nqakula underscores the complexities of corruption allegations within South Africa's political landscape, leaving many questions unanswered and the future uncertain for the former government official.
